The building, which was honored in the Outstanding Affordable Project category, is located in Wingate, Brooklyn and designed by Dattner Architects. This affordable housing development is a premier example of sustainable and energy efficient design.

As the sustainability and energy consultants, Steven Winter Associates, Inc. (SWA) facilitated the project’s certification under multiple energy efficiency programs, including ENERGY STAR® Multifamily High Rise through NYSERDA’s Multifamily Performance Program (MPP), LEED® for Homes Multifamily Midrise™, and Enterprise Green Communities®.

CAMBA Gardens was realized through the rehabilitation of a previously underutilized healthcare center, as affiliated with Kings County Hospital. This retrofit provided a unique opportunity to co-locate affordable housing and supportive healthcare services, contributing to the overall health and economic stability of the community. Additionally, the development is helping revitalize the Brooklyn neighborhood with connectivity to public transportation, grocery stores, banks, schools, and parks.

CAMBA Gardens Phase II was completed in 2017 following the completion of CAMBA Gardens Phase I, which received the 2018 Excellence in Affordable Housing Development award from the Urban Land Institute. Phase II includes 293 additional units of affordable and supportive housing that promotes healthy indoor air quality and has a projected energy cost savings of 22% over ASHARAE: 90.1-2007. The building includes on-site supportive services for formerly homeless and low-income households, featuring indoor recreational and community spaces, a children’s play area, tenant gardening beds, roof terraces, and walking paths. In addition, there are over 60,000 square feet of outdoor recreational and landscaped spaces.

SWA is honored to have worked on CAMBA Gardens Phase I and II, which will continue to provide affordable housing for tenants and establish positive and beneficial relationships with the hospital and community.
